Before you install: Lumen is a proof of concept third-party viewer for the Second Life® virtual world. This software is not provided or supported by Linden Lab, the makers of Second Life. Lumen is not affiliated with Linden Lab or the Firestorm project. There is no customer support.
What is unusual about it is an AI assistant that can act as you: speak in chat, send instant messages, give and delete things (to the Trash), build, write scripts, teleport, and answer people while you are away if you ask it to. The viewer asks you before anything like that, and nothing is sent to an AI until you choose one. Like Firestorm, it wears a small scripted attachment that the viewer talks to. Lumen itself adds no content that is not General. What it sends where.
It is an ordinary Second Life viewer, so it installs like one. Log in with your usual Second Life name and password.
macOS: Apple silicon only; there is no Intel build.
Windows: the installer is not signed, so the first time it may show “Windows protected your PC”. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
Open Preferences → AI and choose what the assistant runs on: your ChatGPT, Claude or Mistral account, an API key, or a model on your own computer. The guide below takes you through it.
Lumen is a proof of concept, made to find out how useful a viewer with an assistant in it can be.
I built it on Firestorm so I could test it on a viewer I already use, and because their source is very well set up to build on. That said, this is an experiment. It is not meant to replace your normal viewer, or to be a viewer for daily use.
There may be many bugs nobody has found yet, and the AI may do things you did not intend, so use it at your own risk.
