In short: nothing is sent to me, the person who makes Luminous, unless you send a bug report. There are no accounts, no analytics and no automatic crash reports. What leaves your Mac goes to Second Life, as it does with any viewer.

Bug reports

A bug report is only sent when you send one, from the form on this site or from inside Luminous. It contains:

  • what you write: the summary, what happened and the steps to repeat it;
  • your Luminous version, macOS version and Mac model;
  • your avatar name and email address, if you give them;
  • a link, and the log files and screenshot you attach.

A report sent from inside Luminous also includes what the viewer fills in for you: the text from its About box (graphics, memory and settings), your avatar name and key, the grid and the region. It can attach the viewer's log files and a screenshot. A log records what the viewer did while it ran, such as the regions you visited, so look through it first if that matters to you.

Attached files are deleted 180 days after a report is marked fixed or closed. The text of the report is kept, so I can see the history of a problem. Ask me, and I will delete yours.

Your IP address is not stored. A one-way code made from it is kept with the report, only to limit how many reports one address can send in an hour.

Other places Luminous contacts

  • Second Life, as any viewer does.
  • needfulsl.com, to see whether a newer release of Luminous is out. It sends nothing about you, though the server sees the request as any website would.
  • Flickr, only if you connect your Flickr account in Luminous and send a picture there. You sign in on Flickr's own page, and Luminous keeps the access Flickr gives it on your Mac. It sends only the picture you choose, with the title, description and rating you set, and the region's name if you tick that.

What stays on your Mac

  • The snapshots you save, and your settings.
  • Chat and instant message logs – ordinary logs, kept if you have them turned on in Preferences.
  • The viewer's own log files. They only leave your Mac if you attach them to a bug report.

This website

These pages use no cookies and no outside services. Fonts and images come from Needful's own server.

Visits are counted without storing your IP address: a visit is recorded as a one-way code made from your address, your browser and the day, so the count can tell visitors apart on one day and not from one day to the next. The country comes from DB-IP's free country list. If your browser asks sites not to track it, your visit is not counted.

Downloads are counted the same way. When you download Luminous, the date, the Luminous version, your country and the same one-way code are recorded. Your IP address is not kept. If your browser asks sites not to track it, your download is not counted.
